On the road to sustainable mobility with zero emissions, the BMW Group presents yet another milestone. The BMW Concept ActiveE promises to be a purely electric model of the BMW brand. The realistic study is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé, which has enjoyed great success around the world, and for the first time reinterprets the outstanding agility and driving pleasure characteristic of this model in an engine concept to zero emissions.
With the world premiere of the BMW Concept ActiveE at the North American International Auto Show 2010 in Detroit, the BMW Group aims to reaffirm the continued consistent implementation of its research and development in the field of electric mobility. Field experiments initiated in the framework of the project in the U.S. and Europe with the MINI E are already providing important information about the requirements for future production vehicles to electric drive. Concurrently, the project i started the development of a second at least as large test fleet of electric vehicles based on BMW 1 Series Coupé. Although these cars are designed for everyday use by private customers in the framework of a large-scale field trial. The information gathered here will feed into the development of a standard car to electric drive, the BMW Group intends to market with a sub-brand of the BMW brand in the first half of next decade.
Among the specific characteristics of the BMW Concept ActiveE there are the innovative arrangement of the electric motor, power electronics and the electric energy storage system. The intelligent integration of components within the existing vehicle concept of the BMW 1 Series Coupe can make available four comfortable seats and a luggage compartment of 200 liters. The engine designed specifically for the first purely electric BMW produces an output of 125 kW/170 bhp providing a maximum torque of 250 Nm and speeds up the car from 0 to 100 km / h in under 9 seconds.
The electric motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries are also a new concept. The high-voltage batteries are distinguished by their characteristics of efficiency and capacity optimized. They offer a range of about 160 km (100 miles) in everyday use. An intelligent battery management ensures that these driving cycles can be made for the most part regardless of external weather conditions. The lithium-ion batteries also have time
Charging particularly short. The battery system can be fully recharged in 3 hours through a so-called Wallbox with a current of 50 amperes and a voltage of 230/240 volts.
The BMW Concept ActiveE embodies a new dimension of mobility purely electric. The dynamic potential and the high torque of the propulsion system ensure together with the rear wheel drive typical of the mark
the characteristic BMW driving pleasure with zero emissions. The convincing functionality and high usability daily are additional attributes that define the concept for the first time the electric mobility in the style BMW.
In the development of vehicle concepts and drive systems in the framework of innovative EfficientDynamics, the BMW Group attaches to electric mobility a central role. The BMW Group aims to develop medium-term innovative vehicle concepts for zero-emission mobility in metropolitan areas. The concept called the Megacity Vehicle provides the option of purely electric propulsion.
The BMW Concept ActiveE marks another important step forward in realizing this concept. The components of the vehicle will be further developed for subsequent integration into the Megacity Vehicle.
The BMW Concept ActiveE promises driving pleasure typical of the brand to zero emissions. Further advances in propulsion sector have created the conditions for the electric mobility infuse a typical BMW style.
The result today is an innovative synchronous electric motor specially designed for the BMW Concept ActiveE, which has a particularly high efficiency, an optimized deployment of power and a compact structure.
The maximum power of the new electric motor is 125 kW/170 hp. The maximum torque of 250 Nm, the electric motor in accordance with the typical characteristics, is already available in starting from a standstill and remains usable for an exceptionally wide load range. In contrast to the asynchronous electric motors, the new motor unit maintains a relatively high torque even at higher speeds or schemes, couple that with a higher load does not drop so suddenly but gradually. The trend of torque at higher rpm is therefore much more similar to the usual characteristics for a combustion engine.
The concept of the car and the propulsion system can deliver the agility and dynamic acceleration values typical of the BMW 1 Series Coupé. With realistic simulations was given a value of less than 9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h, while the threshold of 60 km / h is reached already after less than 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to about 145 km / h, which is 90 mph.
The innovative character of the electric motor is expressed also in the relationship between engine power and space optimized. The compact engine package is fully integrated in the rear axle of the BMW Concept ActiveE. Here occupies the space destined to the differential in conventional cars, whose function is integrated in the propulsion system.
The intense driving experience in the first BMW to drive only electric is not only the result of a shooting incredibly spontaneous, but also a dynamic deceleration strongly dependent on the movement of the accelerator pedal. As soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the electric motor assumes the function of the alternator that sends the current generated by the kinetic energy to the battery of the car. Heavy use of this so-called recovery of energy through the motor increases the range up to 20 percent.
At the same time it generates a braking torque which causes the already effective deceleration of the vehicle. This reaction makes driving very comfortable especially in the fields of mean velocity, therefore, also subject to continual variations. In city driving about 75 percent of all deceleration processes is possible without having to use the brakes.
The deceleration generated by a recuperative act only on the rear wheels. The conventional braking system of the BMW Concept ActiveE intervenes only when the driver by actuating the brake pedal requires a higher deceleration. The power of deceleration is generated hydraulically. In the case in which during braking Recuperative or hydraulic occurs a critical condition for the driving stability, the dynamic stability control (DSC), by means of braking interventions targeted and interventions on the speed of response of the motor, ensures safe braking in each circumstances.
The brake system is equipped with a new electric vacuum pump that is activated only when needed. Along with the electromechanical steering, already known in the standard models of the BMW 1 Series, it further increases the overall efficiency of the car.
To power the motor and all other features of the BMW Concept ActiveE has been specially designed for this
a car battery lithium ion cells. The high-voltage battery units are distinguished by particularly high storage capacity and cycle times of exceptionally long life. For the first time are used
In this case, energy storage developed specifically for automotive applications from the BMW Group in collaboration with the cooperation partner SB LiMotive. The batteries are among efficient
key components in the design of production cars to electric drive. Thanks to the cooperation of the BMW Group with new partners for cooperation, a joint venture between the companies Bosch and Samsung SDI, it features a combination of the know-how in technologies applied to the batteries and the electric mobility. The objective is to
to exploit, in the development of the Megacity Vehicle, the best technology available in the field of energy storage.
The lithium-ion technology has long since put to test their ability to build resistance and charge-discharge cycles in many application areas, such as the area of mobile and portable computers. The technological competence of the cooperation partners SB LiMotive ensures that these features are also guaranteed under the particular conditions of use in the car and the related requirements in terms of duration, exercise tolerance and safety.
The lithium ion battery in the BMW Concept ActiveE have its own liquid cooling system that contributes to the increase of storage capacity, is also the length of the cells. The high storage capacity is the decisive factor for achieving a range as large as possible. The storage system developed
for the BMW Concept ActiveE offers the chance to walk on a fully charged battery, according to the U.S. FTP72 urban cycle, a distance of about 240 km (150 miles). Use by the customer, with auxiliary equipment included, it would stand waiting for the autonomy of about 160 km (100 miles). An intelligent battery management, specifically designed for the BMW Concept ActiveE, ensures the achievement of autonomy unusually high even in the practical reality of daily use and this is regardless of external weather conditions.
