With 270,000 units sold since market launch in autumn 2005, the S-Class W 221 Series sedan is the top segment of the most popular in the world. Since 1951, when the Type 220 was born with the direct ancestor of the S-Class Mercedes-Benz has sold about 3.3 million cars of that model.
The S-Class is a leading international market. Thanks to its advanced technology, high comfort and safety systems to futuristic, the flagship Mercedes-Benz is considered a true benchmark of automotive development.

S 400 HYBRID: the sedan segment with higher gasoline engine more efficient in the world

The 2009 S-Class is, as the previous edition, the most advanced expression of automotive development. Evidence of this is the new S 400 HYBRID, the first production car in the world with hybrid with lithium ion battery. With this model, Mercedes-Benz is taking an important pioneering step towards the electrification of the automobile. Thanks to the combination of the V6 petrol version with the improved compact hybrid module, the S 400 HYBRID comes also as the sedan segment higher gasoline more efficient in the world. The combined use in the new European driving cycle (NEDC) is just 7.9 to 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers, which is matched with only 186-189 grams per kilometer, the lowest level of CO 2 in the world for the segment.

Against these values the benefits are truly extraordinary. Thanks to different devices, 3.5-liter gasoline produces an output of 205 kW/279 hp, while the electric motor provides additional 15 kW / 20 hp and a torque of 160 Nm The combined power of 220 kW/299 hp is therefore and the combined maximum torque of 385 Nm

Mercedes-Benz S 400 S 350 HYBRID comes from, but the powertrain was substantially modified. The budget includes a 3.5-liter gasoline V6, the additional permanent magnet electric motor, automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC 7-speed configured for accommodation of the hybrid module, power electronics and control systems, processors and high-voltage battery lithium ion. The hybrid module also has a handy feature ECO start / stop that automatically shuts down the engine with the vehicle stationary, for example at traffic lights.

The lithium ion battery accumulates kinetic energy recovered

Decelerating the electric motor acts as generator to regenerate and recover the vehicle's kinetic energy. The electric motor increases by targeting the action of the engine brake of an internal combustion engine and brake wheel traditional stages that follow one another seamlessly. The recovered energy is stored in a lithium ion battery, powerful yet compact and housed in the engine compartment and can be called if necessary. The management of this complex system is entrusted to a high performance unit, also mounted near the engine.

The key benefits compared to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries are the highest energy density and better electrical efficiency compared to smaller size and lower weight. Its small footprint in the engine compartment keeps unchanged the generous size of the passenger and luggage volume.

Efficient diesel and petrol

The engine line S-Class 2009 includes, in addition futuristic hybrid form of the S 400 HYBRID, eight engines, two diesel and gasoline engines six to six, eight and twelve cylinders. Thanks to some info targeted to improve aerodynamics, the adoption of tires with less rolling resistance and the changes in the steering, fuel pumps and automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC, Mercedes-Benz designers have managed to reduce the 7% fuel consumption and CO 2.

With a maximum consumption of 7.6 liters of diesel per km in the NEDC combined, which is matched by a level of CO 2 emissions of 199 to 201 grams per kilometer, including the S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY (173 kW/235 hp ) ensures excellent values in the upper segment. Mercedes-Benz achieves this exemplary level of efficiency thanks to a BlueEFFICIENCY package tailored, which includes a particularly effective coating underbody aerodynamic and decoupling the clutch for the 7G-TRONIC with the vehicle stationary.

The 3.0-liter diesel engine is also available for the S 350 CDI 4MATIC. The second eight-cylinder diesel version is the S 450 CDI (235 kW/320 hp) with a displacement of 4.0 liters. The petrol engine range comprises the six-cylinder S 350 / S 350 4MATIC (200 kW/272 hp) 3.5-liter engine and the two eight-cylinder S 450 / S 450 4MATIC (250 kW/340 hp 4.7-liter displacement) and S 500 /

S 500 4MATIC (285 kW/388 hp 5.5-liter engine). The flagship model is the S 600 with the powerful twelve-cylinder bi-turbo engine from 380 kW/517 hp, providing acceleration to the prestigious sedan impressive: 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.6 seconds.

Resulting from the collaboration Mercedes-AMG high-performance sedans
S 63 AMG, with the powerful 386 kW/525 hp V8 (6.2 liter), and
S 65 AMG with a powerful twelve-cylinder engine from 450 kW/612 hp (6 liters of displacement).
